  16. wife-to-be into a megabucks ice-cream company; in Pine Plains,
  17. N.Y. Launching his venture from a roadside stand in 1934,
  18. Carvel turned it into a 700-store chain. Along the way he
  19. became widely known for the folksy radio and television
  20. commercials he narrated in a voice as rough as gravel.
